Donation Helps University Fight Cancer

Carbondale, IL, 14 February, 2011 – The George A. Bates Memorial Foundation presented The Hope Light Foundation a check for $10,000 to use in communicating cancer awareness information including funding two Hope Light Cancer Corners that will soon open at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). The donation will also be used by The Hope Light Foundation to continue funding an SIUC Health Education Graduate Student to help the Foundation and the Illinois Cancer Partnership to develop cancer intervention programs. The Bates Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in the areas of family and human services, hospitals, medical care and rehabilitation and gives primarily in Illinois and Kentucky.

The Hope Light Foundation also provided $500 checks to Eta Sigma Gamma and Tau Kappa Epsilon on-campus organizations for their use in the fight against cancer. The Foundation is partnering with the two organizations to sponsor and maintain the two Cancer Corner displays that will be located in the Student Center and the Student Health Center. This marks the first time that Cancer Corners will be located in a university. Previously, Cancer Corners have been located in seven Public Libraries and a County Health Department.

The Cancer Corner concept was originated by The Hope Light Foundation to provide a conveniently accessible place where people can visit to obtain information on all-cancers to include prevention, screening, recognizing signs and symptoms, treatment options, financial resources and survivorship.

Each Cancer Corner display will initially contain over 3,000 pieces of cancer-related material as a free resource to help students, faculty, staff and local residents learn about critical cancer topics to promote early detection and reduce the burden of cancer. All materials, including brochures, pamphlets, booklets and DVDs/CDs, are provided by The Hope Light Foundation at no cost to the university and to the visitors. The materials are obtained from nationally known and respected cancer publication sources including the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Lance Armstrong Foundation and many more.

Metropolis Hope Light Concept Gets Makeover

Metropolis, IL, September 14, 2010. The Metropolis Hope Light Project Committee welcomes the Ohio River Scenic Byway as our new Project partner.  We will be working together in design development and in fundraising for the Metropolis Hope Light.

The Metropolis Project Committee reviewed and approved a new concept developed by Eggemeyer Associates Architects in our meeting on 14 September 2010.  The Metropolis Hope Light site will serve as an Ohio River Transportation Interpretive Center with local transportation history photographs and narrative display boards on the observation deck and surrounding walkways.

The new concept, as depicted below, embraces tourism in both the lighthouse and surrounding area designs.  Although focusing on tourism, the new concept remains consistent with the original Hope Light Project purpose to bring attention to the fight against all cancers.

Click on above rendering for more images.

The Project will be located on the bank of the Ohio River bank at the west entrance to Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis, Illinois.  Major features of the site include:

  • A 50' high operational lighthouse with a white conical shaped tower and observation deck beneath a teal daymark band and open lantern room with a white-light flashing beacon.  The teal daymark band represents the fight against ovarian cancer.

    • A winding stairway around the outside of the tower will provide visitor access to the observation deck overlooking the Ohio River.

  • A handicapped accessible raised sitting area with park benches and trees.

  • A Tourist Information Kiosk providing information on the Ohio Scenic Byway and a walking tour of local places of interest to include the Hope Light Cancer Corner in the nearby Metropolis Public Library.

The site will adjoin Dorothy Miller Park's winding walkways, pavilion with restrooms and picnic areas nestled among the many large trees.  The site will provide a garden environment for visitors to rest, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery while watching river traffic and nearby working tugboats.

The Hope Light Foundation encourages the Ohio River Scenic Byway project in Ohio and Indiana to consider constructing a Hope Light in each state on the river bank along the Byway.  The Metropolis Hope Light Architect, Eggemeyer Associates Architects, has offered to share the lighthouse complex design at no cost with the Byway project in the two states for site adapting to a waterfront location.  Each state will have an opportunity to select; 1) a unique daymark band color associated with a particular cancer of their choice, 2) photographs associated with the states Ohio River river transportation history for display in the complex and 3) space with convenient access for locating a nearby Hope Light Cancer Corner.

The Projects will be a tribute to Ohio River transportation history and a "Beacon of Hope" for cancer patients, cancer survivors and their family and friends.
